How Ionization Works

Ionization is the gaining or losing of electrons. When a low voltage DC electrical current is placed on the electrodes, copper and silver atoms in the electrodes lose an electron and become positively charged. They then become attracted to the opposite electrode. As they attempt to leap from one electrode to the other some of the ionic copper and silver are swept away by the water flowing between the electrodes. These ions are freely dispersed into the pool water, and are readily available to sanitize the pool. Chlorine-Saver^® systems alternate polarity of the electrodes which allows for even usage of both electrodes.

How Metal Ions Sanitize

This environmentally safe method uses a technology developed by NASA. Copper and Silver in their ionic forms (Cu ++ Ag +), when introduced into pool water, are attracted to the negatively charged outer membranes of microorganisms. These positively charged ions then disrupt the outer cellular membranes regular functions and the microorganisms dies. They are then filtered out by the pool filter. With the addition of metal ions helping to sanitize your pool, chlorine levels can be lowered from 3.0 ppm to 0.6 ppm. Most importantly the level of metal ions in your pool water is lower than the standards set for drinking water by Health Canada or the EPA.

Chlorine is an oxidizer and is used up by sunlight, heat and bather load. Where as metal ions are not depleted in this manner. They are used when algae and micro organisms are introduced into the pool. At this point they attach and destroy the microorganisms and algae. Since you set Chlorine-Saver^® units electronically for a desired ion level, any ions used for sanitation will be replaced automatically. Pools with Chlorine-Saver^® units will maintain a more constant sanitation and removal of dead debris by filtration than pools with chlorine alone. This is why pool owners that have Chlorine-Saver^® units installed comment that their pool water stays crystal clear.
